Slyfield community recycling centre and waste transfer station
SITA Surrey is working on behalf of Surrey County Council to relocate the Slyfield community recycling centre and waste transfer station on Moorfield Road, Guildford.
The development will form part of the Slyfield Area Regeneration Project (SARP), which aims to regenerate the Slyfield area. The wider SARP project is currently on hold pending the results of further investigations on the relocation of the existing sewage treatment works, which will enable further options for the SARP site plan to be developed. Once this is complete public consultation will take place on all options.
The new facility will be a larger, more modern community recycling centre, with more containers and parking bays than can be accommodated at the current site.
The waste transfer station will be completely separate so that residents no longer have to queue alongside heavy goods vehicles to access the site. If planning permission is granted the current facility will not have to close during construction, as the new site is separate to the existing one.
Benefits of the proposed facility
The new larger facility will have a number of benefits over the current one, including:
- A layout that makes it easier for residents to recycle.
- Space for more containers, so we can collect a wider range of materials and
- change what goes in each bin in line with seasonal demands.
- Separate roads for cars and heavy goods vehicles to reduce queuing.
- Additional parking spaces so more residents can use the facility at the same time.
- An improved waste transfer station so local councils can collect more materials
- from the kerbside.
- A better location providing easier access.
Next steps
We are currently working on a planning application and hope to submit it to the County Planning Authority in February 2012. The application will cover all aspects of the development including the construction and operational phases. Once the application has been submitted, it will go out to public consultation and will be available to view by appointment at SITA Surrey’s head office at Vine Court, Chalkpit Lane, Dorking, Surrey, RH4 1AJ. It will also be available on Guildford Borough Council’s website and at the council offices.
